Apple Heart Study Program
Apple Inc. is launching the Apple Heart Study program that
will monitor your heart rhythm using Apple Watch. Apple heart study App will
alert affected participants in joint study with Stanford medicine.
Apple is conducting this study with Stanford Medicine to
improve the technology used to identify irregular heart rhythms. Early
diagnosis and treatment of irregular heart rhythms may prevent serious heart
complications including strokes.
This is a one of its kind research study being held using
Apple Watch. Watch uses heart rate sensor to collect data on irregular heart
rhythms and notify users who may be experiencing atrial fibrillation (AFib).
AFib is the disease which is the leading cause of stroke. Many people do not
experience any symptoms, so AFib often goes undiagnosed.
On identifying irregular heart rhythm, participants will
receive a notification on their Apple Watch and iPhone and a free consultation
with a doctor and an electrocardiogram (ECG) patch for additional monitoring.
This Apple Heart Study app is available in the US App Store to customers who
are 22 years or older and have an Apple Watch Series 1 or later.
How to participate in the study
Traditionally clinical studies enroll limited number of
participants for specific medical research but in this study anyone can enroll.
If you have Apple Watch you can participate. Login to US Apple Store, Download
the app and your watch will start monitoring the changes in your heart rhythm.
How it works
Data of your heart is collected using green LED lights that
can flash hundreds of times per second. Light photodiodes can measure blood
flow. Apple watch monitors your heart rhythm using algorithms to analyze data. Apple heart study is underway and we don’t know if it is a
success. Apple is providing health care solutions as screening tools. Apple
might be interested to develop these healthcare solutions as a way to maintain
its market share in wearables.
Apple is also working on the ways to use its watch to monitor
blood sugar levels. If Apple can achieve that, then it could help millions of
diabetic patients. They will be able to manage their disease much better than ever.
